Vietnam temporarily suspends rice exports

VOV.VN - The General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC) said on March 24 it has instructed local customs agencies to temporarily cease rice shipments for export, starting from 00.00hrs of the same day.

In an urgent telegram, the GDVC explained the decision is to realize the Prime Minister’s conclusions at a recent meeting in Hanoi, aimed at ensuring national food security amidst the growing impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) globally.

Rice is considered a strategic product in Vietnam
The provincial and municipal customs departments will only handle customs clearance procedures for consignments having customs declarations done before 00:00hrs on March 24, 2020.

The General Department of Vietnam Customs asked its provincial and municipal customs departments and the Anti-smuggling and Investigation Department to intensify the fight against smuggling and illegal transportation of rice of all kinds across the border and deal with any violations according to the law.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam shipped abroad 895,000 tonnes of rice worth US$410 million in the first two months of the year, increasing 27% in volume and 32.6% in value from a year ago.

Last year, rice exports brought home US$2.81 billion in total.
