Deputy Foreign Minister To Anh Dung says Germany is the most important partner of Vietnam in the European Union
The two sides expressed their delight at the strong development of the Vietnam-Germany strategic partnership in various areas in celebration of 45 years of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties between the two countries in 2020.

Deputy Minister To Anh Dung affirmed that Germany is the most important partner of Vietnam in the European Union. He noted that the two countries’ recent endorsement of the strategic action plan and the establishment of the Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation is an important step toward fostering bilateral cooperation in economics and trade, especially when the Vietnam - EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) will take effect from August 1, 2020.

Both sides agreed to soon ratify the Vietnam - EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), creating a sound legal framework for the two countries’ business communities to increase investment cooperation in the areas of their strength.

Minister of State Niels Annen said Germany attaches great importance to Vietnam’s role in Southeast Asia. He voiced Germany’s support for measures to be taken to deepen the Vietnam-Germany strategic partnership in the areas of mutual concern, such as trade, investment, science - technology, health, education among others.

The Minister of State congratulated Vietnam’s on its initial success in combating the COVID-19 epidemic.

For his part, Deputy Minister Dung highly appreciated Germany’s contribution to the global response to the pandemic and its international cooperation initiatives in this regard. He affirmed that Vietnam is willing to work closely with Germany to maintain trade exchanges, especially of essential goods, medical supplies, raw materials for production and research of vaccines against epidemics.

Dung spoke highly of mutual support between Germany and Vietnam at international forums, especially when the two countries are non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. In addition, Vietnam is assuming the role as the ASEAN Chairman in 2020 while Germany is taking on its role as the rotating EU President in the last 6 months of 2020.

Vietnam supports external partners, including Germany, in strengthening cooperation with ASEAN for common interests, contributing to promoting trade liberalization, multilateralism and compliance with international law in region and the world, Dung said.

The German official thanked Vietnam for supporting the Germany-France initiative on a multilateralism alliance. He suggested that the two countries work closely together toward the establishment of the ASEAN-EU strategic partnership, so as to elevate bilateral cooperation to a new level, more effectively and comprehensively.

Within the UN Security Council, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation and close coordination in addressing issues of mutual concern, actively contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the world.
