The visit is made at the invitation of Chairwoman of the Vietnam National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
Vietnam and Australia officially established diplomatic relations on February 26, 1973 and both nations have upgraded its ties to a comprehensive partnership in 2009. They signed a declaration on strengthening the bilateral comprehensive partnership in 2015.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull signed a joint statement on the establishment of the Vietnam-Australia Strategic Partnership following their talks in Canberra, Australia, on March 15, 2018, as part of the former’s official visit.
Trade turnover between the two nations recorded a 200-fold increase since 1990 to hit US$6.46 billion in 2017 and is projected to reach US$10 billion by 2020.
