India, Vietnam strengthen strategic partnership

(VOV) - India always stands side by side with Vietnam during trying periods and attaches importance to enhancing friendship ties with the country, said the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At a May 25 reception for Vietnam Minister of Defence Phung Quang Thanh, PM Modi praised the bilateral defence cooperation in recent years and affirmed that India is a close and reliable friend of Vietnam.

India identifies Vietnam as one of prioritised countries and will continue to elevate bilateral cooperation, especially in defence, under the framework of the strategic partnership, into a high level.

For his part, General Thanh thanked India’s support for Vietnam during the past struggles for national independence and through the development process.

He briefed the host on cooperative results in defence in recent times and thanked the Indian Government’s support for the two defence ministries to cooperate effectively.

On the same day, Thank held talks with his Indian counterpart, Monohar Parrikar.

Thanh underscored that Vietnam values the traditional friendship and cooperative ties with India and declared support to India’s membership to the UN Security Council at the 2021-2022 period.

The two ministers compared notes on the number of issues of mutual concern and reviewed cooperative results in defence in recent times according to a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation signed in 2009.

They each asserted that ongoing defence cooperation remains a significant pillar of the strategic partnership between the two countries in the future.

They also exchanged measures to further boost defence cooperation in the future, including exchanging official visits at various levels, maintaining dialogue and consultation mechanisms, cooperating in training and the defence industry and taking part in UN peace-keeping activities.

A statement was signed on the joint vision related to defence relations in the 2015-2020 period.

The two ministers also witnessed the signing of an MoU between Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG) and the Indian Coast Guard on the establishment of cooperative relations on trans-national crime prevention.

During Thanh’s stay in India on May 25-26, he met India’s National Security Adviser, Ajit Kumar Doval, Chief of the Army, Staff General, Dalbir Singh Suhag, Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy, RK Dhowan and Vice Chief of Indian Air Force, RK Sharma.

Thanh also visited the Vietnamese Embassy in India.
