The recent discovery of bird flu outbreaks in Bac Lieu province have brought the number of the epidemic-hit provinces to 8, according to the Animal Health Department, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
On February 16, the deadly H5N1 virus was found in a 30 day-old flock of ducks in a household in Vinh Loc hamlet, Vinh Phu Dong commune, Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu province. The disease killed 30 ducks out of a total of 607 in the flock.
Meanwhile, the Quang Ninh provincial Animal Health Department said on February 17 that bird flu had struck a flock of 13 chickens in a household in Ha Khanh precinct, Ha Long city, making 5 birds sick and killing 4 others. All of them had been culled.
The country now has 8 provinces, namely Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Nghe An, Hau Giang, Quang Ninh, Quang Tri, Bac Ninh and Bac Lieu, hit by avian flu within a 21 day period.
